Hurricane Rita (2005)

HURRICANE RITA AFTERMATH

Special Pals, a small local non-profit animal shelter suffered a great loss during the intense winds yesterday that came through during hurricane Rita.  200+ year old trees surround the animal shelter.  One, which lost a large branch and damaged the water well and left the shelter without fresh water to care for the animals today.  Along with the heavy winds there was some internal roof damage.

Westlake Volunteer Fire Department, off of Saums Road, came out today and delivered some much-needed water for the animals.  The Fire Fighters use the old house in front of the property for “search and rescue” training missions for disaster like this every week.

Special Pals is asking the community for volunteers to help repair our water well, cut down and trim back trees and if you have any plywood to please donate so we may fix our interior roof.

All of the boarding animals and shelter animals are safe, no loss of life.  The shelter still has some homeless animals, that were displaced from hurricane Katrina, and hope that we do not find more homeless animals from “Rita”. We ask that if you can please help us find them a new home.
